Ajay Maken resigned as Delhi Congress president on Friday after serving in the post for the last four years.

The 54-year-old Congress leader took to Twitter to thank party workers, the media and Rahul Gandhi as he made the announcement.

He said, “I would like to thank Congress workers in Delhi, the media who continued to cover the Congress party and our leader Rahul Gandhi for their love and support after I took the position of president after the 2015 Assembly elections.”

Reports suggest that while he has cited health problems as a reason to step down from his post, sources have said he may get a position at the Centre.

NDTV reported that he may even contest the Lok Sabha elections.

In September 2018, there were rumours that Maken was likely to resign, but the Congress had denied the rumours. The Congress had then said Maken had gone for a health check-up abroad and would come back and continue to serve as the Congress chief.
