Four convicts in the Naroda Patiya riots case were granted bail by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Of the four convicts, Rajkumar Chaumal and Umesh Bharwad had been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by the Gujarat High Court in June 2018.

The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar called the high court’s verdict of conviction “debatable”, reports News18.

According to the report, the SC bench said the high court had mainly relied on police officials’ identification of these convicts. However, no identification parade was conducted in certain case, which raised doubts over the identification of these convicts in a group of around 15,000 persons, News18 reported.

A mob had killed 97 people, most of them Muslim, in the Naroda Patiya area of Ahmedabad on February 28, 2002, a day after the torching of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra, which triggered state-wide riots in Gujarat.
