2 Dead In West Bengal's Bhatpara After Clashes, Mamata Calls Emergency Meet

According to reports, bombs were hurled and several rounds of bullets fired in the air by members of two warring groups near a newly constructed police station.

Two people, including a teenager, were killed in clashes between unidentified people in West Bengal’s Bhatpara on Thursday morning, four people have been injured.

NDTV reported that in light of the violence, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for an emergency meeting of the state police chief, the chief secretary and other top officials of the state.

Bhatpara is located just north of Kolkata in the North 24 Parganas district.

One of the people who died has been identified as Rambabu Shaw. The identity of the second deceased is yet to be ascertained.

According to reports, bombs were hurled and several rounds of bullets fired in the air by the members of the two warring groups near a newly constructed police station, which was scheduled for inauguration on Thursday.

A team of police officers along with Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel has been deployed in the area, with shops, market places and business establishments seen downing shutters following the unrest.

Bhatpara has witnessed a series of clashes since 19 May, when bypoll was held in the Assembly constituency.

The NDTV report said that the blasts took place right before the arrival of the Director General of Police who was supposed to inaugurate the new building. He had to return to Kolkata.

The report also said that shops and other establishments had to shut down after the violence and the Rapid Action Force had been deployed.
