How To Move On Even When Your Divorce

How To Move On Even When Your Divorce Doesn't

When my clients, including extremely qualified women -- doctors, chartered accountants and the like -- come to me seeking legal guidance for a divorce I explain in minute detail all the legal courses of action available to them. I feel extremely happy exhorting the principles of the judicial system followed in India, how our laws are so fantastically drafted. Then comes the deadly question, "How much time will it take?"

Yakub Memon's Balance

Yakub Memon's Balance Sheet

While on statistics, isn't Yakub Memon a chartered accountant? One of the basic principles of accounting is that whatever you deposit in the bank is the only amount that you can withdraw, unless, of course, you are borrowing -- in other words your debits must match your credits for the balance sheet to be tallied.

Chinese Whispers And Divorce

Sometimes the real solutions are directly available and visible but the Chinese whisperers - the mediators, well-wishers and lawyers -- obscure our vision and we aren't able to see clearly. What we see is a distorted version of the truth because the "whisperers" come in with their own biases which they pass off as experience and this adds to further stress in the marriage.

The Hare, The Tortoise And The UPSC's Superwomen

As news broke of women dominating the upper ranks of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams, I burst into a celebratory jig, pumped my fist in the air and said woo hoo! I felt like waking up all the men I know to say, "Listen, grab a copy of the newspaper and tell me what you think." (My actual thoughts were this: "Tell me what you think about this obituary to your entitlement of dominance" but that wouldn't have been very polite).

With New Custody Proposal, Kids May Break Free From Divorce Tug Of War

By recognising the need for joint custody and also proposing a detailed parenting plan to the court and recognising the grandparents' rights to meet the grandchildren it seems that India is finally waking up to the fact that whether we like it or not, divorce is that unwanted guest that is not going away soon.

To The Supreme Court: Please Save Lawyers Like Me From Extinction

As the images of Salman Khan walking out of the court after his conviction flashed on TV my joy knew no bounds and I sent out multiple messages to some of my cynical friends saying, "Money can buy you happiness, but not the Indian judiciary." It was a validation of my belief in Satyameva Jayate --Truth Shall Triumph -- proudly displayed on our Ashok Chakra.

The D Word: How To Banish The Stigma Around Divorce

So, what is it about divorce that leads to hushed whispers when we speak of it in the context of someone we know? Why is there an element of the "breaking news" variety of gossip attached to it? News of it is shared with a mix of sympathy, pity, salaciousness, condescension and, in some cases, envy. It is very rarely talked about in a matter-of fact manner.

Divorce Is A Special Type Of Hell For Indian

Divorce Is A Special Type Of Hell For Indian Women

Divorce (noun): The legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or some other competent body. This is how the Oxford dictionary defines divorce. Other dictionaries offer minor variations of the same definition. They really gladdened my heart when I first read them as they made divorce sound so simple, like walking into a store and buying a box of candy. This image fades when I think back on my own divorce.

Pink Power: The Many Hues Of A Superwoman (Part 4)

At my work desk I can't help but thank god for making me a woman in this day and age, where I have the opportunity to be the Mistress of the Universe. I cast my mind back to some of the women who have been iconic for me and millions of others. Most of them have been game changers. They scaled mountains, all the while ignoring the naysayers who said that these peaks of success didn't even exist.

Pink Power: The Many Hues Of A Superwoman (Part 3)

"You can tell me your sins," she says to the other girl, "and I'll absolve you if I think they are sins in the first place." Having said this, she smiles a reassuring smile and leads her friend out of the bedroom and down to the seaside. There they sneak a cigarette and discuss the 'sinner's' recent loss of her virginity to a boyfriend with a reputation of being quite the Casanova.

Pink Power: The Many Hues Of A Superwoman (Part 2)

It seems just yesterday that this baby girl communicated her needs in goos and gaas, understood only by her mother who babbled right back in a series of coos. Now this baby is advising her mother about computers, hair colour and the latest trends in fashion, how to look hip and trendy and frankly to "get with the plan".

Pink Power: The Many Hues Of A Superwoman

Each time I blink I see pink. I'm not kidding, it's true. Maybe because it's my favourite colour, maybe because it makes people look softer, maybe because it's the colour of candy floss, maybe because it is the colour of my lips and once upon a time of my cheeks, maybe because it denotes strength - the strength of a woman that makes her a Superwoman.

My Valentine's Day Date With Brad Pitt

I wait for a while as though expecting Brad to materialise with his horse-driven carriage or maybe the modern version of it, perhaps a sports BMW - a two-seater where we would sit so close to each other that even without consciously trying to, our bodies would brush against each other sending naughty thrills down our spine. Alas! I don't see him so I do the next best thing. I stick my arm out and hail an auto.

The Mole Near My Lips And Other Flaws That Cause Divorce

Recently I read, in a newspaper no less, that a woman was divorcing her husband a week into the marriage because he had poor table manners. I gasped when I read the article and then doubled over in laughter. I wondered, have we really stooped to such lows in our quest to achieve perfection in everything in our lives? Is imperfection that bad? Why is it difficult to be happy with what we have, flaws and all?

It's A Divorce, Not A Nuclear War

This makes me wonder how we are capable of so much hatred towards someone who, not so long ago, we shared our bed, our hopes, our dreams and our lives with.
