This team of IIT graduates did built foundations under their dreams of building an excellent school in a remote part of Bihar to cater to families who could otherwise not have access to such quality education. Rise High Public School has been operational for a year now. Currently it has around 240 students. The school, spread over 3 acres of land in Aurangabad district - 15km from Aurangabad city, Bihar, provides world-class, affordable, English-medium education in the CBSE curriculum.
Uma was born and raised in Chennai in South India. She currently lives with her family in Cologne, Germany. Her early years in India and later Singapore gives her strong Asian roots while her exposure to European culture, people and cities gives her new ways of seeing and adapting to this universe. She loves to travel, write (mostly about unsung heroes and un-acclaimed places), indulge in chocolate tasting and debunk ridiculous Asian stereotypes in Europe! When she is not expanding her German vocabulary or marketing her children's handmade cards she is on her yoga mat twisting, turning, bending, sun saluting, meditating and most importantly breathing -- to let go and start afresh every day. Uma is also a volunteer at the IAHV. You can browse uma at umamuthuraaman.com or follow her on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Instagram (umamuthuraaman) umamuthuraaman.com
I grew up in a quintessential upper middle-class Chettiar family in Chennai. In the 1980s, most of my summer holidays were spent with my grandparents in Chettinad -- a region tucked deep down in South India between Trichy and Madurai. It is the residence of the Nattukottai Chettiars, a community of traders and bankers. After a long gap of 15 years, last summer I went back to revisit. Here's a compilation for fellow travellers seeking to unravel a new place and culture.
