Many of us turn into compulsive shoppers. We shop for ourselves, we shop to gift, we shop to avail of discounts, we shop as a form of therapy. Somewhere along the way, the joy of celebration is lost.

I reached out for a canister and without really looking, scooped out a fistful of the contents and tossed them into my mouth. It was the new savoury mixture, loaded with peanuts and curry leaves that my mother had recently purchased. I felt pure bliss wash over me as the spice and salt coated my lips and tongue. As I reached for a second helping, the thundering voice of my father reached my ears.

Indian culture, I was finally seeing, placed an exceptional weight on "sumangali" - a woman's auspiciousness or access to it was measured by the weight of her marital status. It was ridiculous. Yet I found myself for the first time in my life wondering about my weight self-worth. The answer ironically came to me during a wedding I attended.
