My father taught us that the difference between fear and respect is that one is forced whilst the other is earned. He showed us how one can bring up children through the latter, an impracticable thought to many. That is why, during the 25 years that I shared with him, there was not a single moment that he raised his voice.

We've been in the Middle East for less than a year but one of our first impressions, confirming the illusory nature of this region, has lasted: the lopsided emphasis that people place on materialism and designer labels. Rigid judgments are formed about people based on the luxury items they do or do not have, discussions bordering on intellectual discourse are held on the merits of various brands at social and workplace events.

On 30 January 2013 my husband was abducted by six men in broad daylight on his way back from work, about 1.5 km from our house in Defense, apparently one of Karachi's "safest" and "poshest" districts, making me realise how fluid and relative the term "safe" really is and how vulnerable our concocted cocoons actually are.
