Shobhaa De feels that merely belonging to the elite class lends legitimacy to all her spurious views and prejudices. Her posing for selfies is natural and inevitable but athletes should only work hard and not be distracted by such things and cause us embarrassment. Everything she does is justifiable, but others not as privileged as her should stay in their place.

What can you possibly learn from someone who speaks like you, whose world view is exactly like you? Whose voice is an echo of yours? Nothing. But someone who is different can challenge you and you can challenge that person and benefit from it. Multiculturalism, cosmopolitanism are the need of the day. We need differences. We need diversity. It is possible to have multiple belongings, rather than a single identity.

Indrani is being portrayed as a calculating small-town girl on a ruthless climb up the social ladder. What I wish to fervently communicate to the media is that ambition is not a bad thing. It does not lead most people, or women in particular, to murder people. Amidst all this frenzy, there is real food for thought. It brings to our minds a very important question. Not just for Indrani but all of us. How much is too much?

I am an Indian woman who prides herself on being a modern, secular, well-read person. My female friends, like me, are 30-somethings, mostly urban upper/middle class where women enjoy comparatively better status. They have studied in prestigious schools and colleges. They are impeccably groomed and very eloquent... but only on all things fitness and fashion.
