Disability cuts across class, caste, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, nationality. However, often, a differently-abled person's first identity among his/her other identities is his/her disability. Reducing disability to just a medical or physical condition is to ignore the fact that this community faces discrimination on the basis of their disability.

Last month, I went to an NGO in north Delhi with a friend who worked there. Coincidentally, on that very day, the CBSE class 12 results came out. The mood there was very jubilant because more than five visually challenged students associated with the NGO got more than 90% marks while a few others got more than 80%. Though these performances would not be considered extraordinary in normal circumstances, these were not ordinary students.

There's something forlorn about DD now, as it clings to its place amidst far glossier channels. It looks like a relic of the past, its old glory faded to almost nothing. When all other private channels are continuously revamping and transforming themselves, DD has chosen to look backwards by showing its own old serials and changing the channel's logo to that of the 1980s. DD is looking backwards, and how can that result in anything but a downfall?

When the West Indies won the T20 cricket world cup in April, it was a moment of joy for every cricket lover, even as England's Ben Stokes, who got hit for four consecutive sixes, burst into tears. Every cricket fan appreciated the Caribbean team's performance, especially since nobody expected them to win the tournament in style. But the T20 triumph notwithstanding, the West Indies have been on a downward trajectory.

International relations as a discipline has evolved quite a bit since its inception centuries ago, incorporating over the years various strands of political philosophy and thinking such as realism, liberalism, constructivism, Marxism and even feminism. Issues related to ethnicity, class, race, gender and now even sexuality are being talked about by scholars across regions. Strangely, however, people with disabilities are absent from this discourse.
