Antiquated, repressive, protective -- whatever it might be, the <em>burqa</em> has attracted enough controversy in the recent past to be banned from public life by several countries. The real challenge is to understand why such a convention came into being and what exactly we need to denounce about it... for everything is not wrong with the <em>burqa</em> per se, but only how it is used as tool for suppression.

India has fought some tough battles in the relatively recent past: The Indo-Pak War of 1948, the Sino-Indian War of 1962; the Indo-Pak Wars of 1965 and 1971, the Kargil- War of 1999. Yet, those who actually fought in those bloody battles and managed to survive are still fighting for their existence. If that is not a shame, what is?

Pakistan's role in Ashraf Ghani's victory in the presidential election last year had started the ball rolling towards a pro-Pak, anti-India, proxy government to deliberately scuttle India's attempt at strengthening its ties with Afghanistan. By keeping India away from the peace talks, Pakistan may gain strategic depth in Afghanistan, but will that ensure a safe and secure Afghanistan is the question.
