We need to invest in human-focused, non-animal technologies.
Humane Society International (HSI) India is one of the largest non-profit animal protection organizations in the world working to protect all animals—including animals in laboratories, farm animals, companion animals, and wildlife—and our record of achievement demonstrates our dedication and effectiveness. Our organization has a strong record of program achievements and serves a critical and expanding role in global efforts to reduce animal suffering. Through fieldwork, policy formation, humane education and direct care and services, our organization has helped advance the cause of animal welfare in dozens of nations worldwide by protecting street dogs, responding to disasters, saving wild animals from abuse, protecting marine mammals, fighting factory farming, and striving to end toxicity testing on animals. We are the leading animal advocacy organization, seeking a humane world for all animals, including people. Our motto is Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty.
A radical new path for protein.

Today, India celebrates 69 years of freedom. That single word encapsulates the right as well as the power to think, act and live with dignity. It took years of struggle and sacrifice for the citizens of India to realize this dream. But have these fundamental rights that we human beings cherish and celebrate every year blinded us to the pain and struggle of millions of animals willfully denied their basic freedoms to serve human ends?

The season of Nagpanchami is drawing close and Sumanth Bindhumadhav knows he has his work cut out for him. As a consultant with Humane Society International/India, he is trained to rescue animals, including snakes. He received word recently that a group of people, purportedly from the snake charmer community, had captured and were holding snakes. With World Snake Day taking place on 16 July, it's important to remind everyone that it's illegal to capture, display and kill snakes in India under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Dispensing with a problem is not the same as solving it. India's Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) would do well to note that. In the wake of severe losses by farmers due to crop depredation by wildlife across India, the MoEFCC allowed the culling of crop-raiding wildlife by invoking Section 62 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (WPA). Shockingly, the memorandum is mum on encouraging states to hold consultations with wildlife experts and explore non-invasive mitigation techniques.

World Environment Day was observed this Sunday, and there is no better way to celebrate it than to #jointheherd by reiterating our commitment to elephant protection through firm action. For it is unthinkable to even imagine the words, "And then there were elephants."

It's World Turtle Day on 23 May, and this perhaps is an apt occasion to reflect on the violence, intended and unintended, that is being done to these gentle creatures. Turtles have existed since the beginning of the age of dinosaurs; sadly, they are now in grave danger. We cannot afford to ignore the continuing disappearance of these fascinating reptiles.

Not only does animal agriculture consume unsustainable amounts of water, it also can pollute a region's water supply. But animal agriculture doesn't have to be our proverbial white elephant. According to a 2012 study, vegetarian diets dramatically reduce the pressure on our water resources. By choosing more plant-based foods, we can reduce our impact on the environment and help animals. With World Earth Day on 22 April, it's something to chew on.

The FAO predicts that animal agriculture will increase by approximately 70% by 2050, with most of that growth taking place in emerging economies like India. Thus, investment is likely to be significant in the public and private sector of meat, egg and milk production. The World Bank's safeguard policies set the standard for public sector lending and investments in emerging economies. That is why NGOs around the world, including HSI, have appealed to the financial institution to include enforceable animal welfare standards in its safeguard policies.

To help address the possibility of the outbreak of disease, HSI/India has proposed a Mass Dog Vaccination program in the area to vaccinate the dogs and identify any that may be infected. Previously, MDV programs have been carried out in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and other national parks around the world. The MDV program is a proven humane solution that can help maintain the delicate balance between the habitat of the wild and human settlements with dogs.
