While incumbent Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is looking to make a comeback for a historic fourth term as the leader of a BJP government, the Congress is fighting to wrest power from the ruling BJP in the state.

Exit polls have predicted a tight race in MP, with more than one survey giving an edge to the Congress. However, Chouhan, when speaking to the media on Sunday, said he was confident that the BJP will come to power. Only one poll said the BJP will cross the halfway mark comfortably. The Times Now-CNX exit poll predicted a victory for incumbent chief minister Chouhan and said the BJP will get 126 seats, Congress 89, BSP 6 and others 9. However even this polls indicated that the BJP's tally will reduce by almost 40 seats ion comparison to 2013.

In the last assembly polls held in MP in 2013, the BJP had swept 165 seats, while the Congress had won just 58 seats. BSP four and others three seats.

Chouhan is fighting the polls along with Congress leader senior Congress leader Arun Yadav. While Congress leaders Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kamal Nath are not fighting the elections, they may be contenders for the post of chief minister if Congress wins.
