Rajasthan went to polls on Friday with BJP's Vasundhara Raje looking to continue her tenure as chief minister and Congress looking to make a comeback. Rajasthan is known to vote out the state government every five years.
Raje is BJP's chief ministerial candidate and she is competing against BJP leader Jaswant Singh's son Manvendra Singh in the Jhalrapatan constituency.
Early opinion polls have predicted that the Congress is likely to win in the state breaking BJP's winning streak in all big states of India.
Polling began in the state at 8 am and is going to continue till 5 pm. It saw 42% turnout till 1 pm. A total of 51,687 polling booths have been set up in 199 out of the total 200 assembly constituencies where polling is going on amid tight security.
And people cast their ballot, here's are five people who spoke to Huffpost India about who they have voted for and why they are voting.
Gopali Bai
Gopali Bai is 103 years old. She voted on Friday afternoon at a polling booth at the Higher Secondary School in the C-Scheme Area of Jaipur(West) located in the Civil Lines constituency. "It is my responsibility to vote so I came out today here," she said.
Kavita Chauhan
"It feels good to have voted. I feel Congress will comeback to power. Jobs is a major issue this time," said first-time voter Kavita Chauhan after voting. She is preparing for her civil services examination.
Dr Fateh Singh
Dr Fateh Singh, 73 years old, retired as the director of Medical Health Services in the Rajasthan Government in 2002. "What facility are getting from the government depends upon the type of government that we select. Frankly speaking, we have voted for the prime minister because he is dynamic, at least we can believe him. Otherwise, there is no difference between the current chief minister and the one before him," Singh said after casting is vote.
Salma Bano
Thirty-year-old Salma Bano works from home and stitches sarees. She has a 7-year-old son. Her husband works on making designs for sarees. "Price rise has broken the backs of people. My son's education has become costlier. I voted thinking if someone new comes to power in government maybe they will be able to address this problem," Bano said.
Padmini Kanwar
Padmini Kanwar, a 52-year-old homemaker who voted at the Krishi Bhawan booth in Jaipur city, told Huffpost India, "We want Vasundhra Raje back in power. She has done good work. I voted for her the last time as well."
