The Chennai Police on Friday arrested a male staffer of SRM University on charges of sexual harassment. This comes after students held protests on Thursday, alleging inaction by the administration on a sexual harassment complaint filed by a woman student of the varsity.

The incident happened in a girls' hostel on campus. When the female student entered the hostel elevator, the university worker, who was also inside the lift, began masturbating in front of her.

The Maraimalai Nagar police told The Times of India that they received a complaint from the hostel warden and arrested the suspect based on it.

The suspect, identified as Arjunan, was a casual worker at the university. The university officials, according to The Hindu, claimed that he was employed on a temporary basis just a fortnight ago and his services have been terminated.

Arjunan would clear out food waste from inside the canteen and mess halls, according to The News Minute.

Meanwhile, the protesting students told PTI that the hostel warden had allegedly delayed access to CCTV footage of the elevator and the registering of a complaint by over two hours.
