Cyclone Gaja Highlights: Navy Put On Alert, Storm To Make Landfall Today

Tamil Nadu has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in six districts. Educational institutions in Puducherry will also remain closed.

The cyclonic storm 'Gaja' is set to make landfall between Cuddalore and Pamban on Thursday evening, bringing heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu. The state has stepped up efforts to ensure that it is geared up to face the cyclone, according to reports.

Fishermen have been advised by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) not to venture into the sea till 16 November. According to ANI, the state administration has also assured the fishermen full cooperation in terms of compensation.

The IMD's bulletin also warned of major damage to thatched huts. Power and communication lines can be uprooted, the bulletin added.

Neighbouring Puducherry was also alerted and precautionary steps were being taken to meet the situation.

Here is what you need to know:

- The Tamil Nadu government has put its machinery on alert and declared that 30,500 rescue personnel were on standby. Nine teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed along with the state government's disaster response force.

Meanwhile, Puducherry Chief Minister Narayanasamy said two NDRF teams have arrived here, according to PTI.

- Indian Navy has also been put on high alert. Two Indian naval ships - Ranvir and Khanjar - are standing by to proceed to the affected areas and undertake relief measures, a Navy official told PTI.

- Tamil Nadu has declared a holiday on Thursday for schools and colleges in six districts. All educational institutions in Puducherry and Karaikal regions would also remain closed.

- In addition to the NDRF, 368 mobile medical teams, 315 veterinary medical teams, motor pumps and swimmers are also ready in Tamil Nadu, according to a report in Hindustan Times.

- Dams, lakes and rivers channels were being monitored continuously, Tamil Nadu Revenue Minister RB Udayakumar was quoted as saying by PTI.

- Udayakumar also said that mobile operators have assured to move 'Cell on Wheels', mobile platforms to provide uninterrupted mobile connectivity to Nagapattinam and Cuddalore.

- The Cuddalore District Disaster Management Authority will set up a radio station to reach more number of people, reported ANI.
