Yash Raj Films' Thugs of Hindostan is gearing up for a Diwali release. The film, which features a star-studded cast, including Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh, is a period-drama directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, who made Dhoom 3 (and also Tashan, never forget).
Fortunately for the producers, the film, one of the most expensive ones YRF has produced, isn't clashing with any other film, thereby giving it a free window.
Trade analysts routinely say that a festive release definitely results in improved footfall as far as ticket sales are concerned. But does that really hold true?
Here's a list of 5 festive releases and how they fared at the box-office.
1. Golmaal Again (2017)
Rohit Shetty's multi-starrer, part of the profitable franchise of the Ajay Devgn-starrer Golmaal movies, released during Diwali 2017, and went on to make Rs 205 crore at the box-office. The film was one of the big successes of 2017.
2. Secret Superstar (2017)
Produced by Aamir Khan, who also had a cameo appearance in the Zaira Wasim-starrer, Secret Superstar had an average opening but went on to collect Rs 62.63 crore at the domestic box-office, a decent figure when you consider the film's modest budget. The movie also performed exceedingly well when it released in China in January this year, grossing nearly $109 million, according to Forbes.
3. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)
Karan Johar's star-studded romantic drama may have had a chart-busting soundtrack but that didn't quite translate into a rousing box-office reception. The film, which cost about Rs 98 crore to make, earned a humble Rs 106 crore at the domestic box-office. It's overseas success, however, helped in offsetting its average domestic performance.
4. Shivaay (2016)
Made on a budget of over Rs 100 crore, Ajay Devgn's action fantasy, which had mythological subtexts, didn't quite set the box-office on fire, earning a measly Rs 124 crore worldwide. The fact that it clashed with Johar's Ae Dil... perhaps caused a dent in the film's box-office earnings.
5. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015)
Salman Khan, who usually blocks the Eid weekend, decided to arrive during Diwali in 2015 with Sooraj Barjatya's family drama that starred him in a double role. The film, which also featured Sonam Kapoor and was produced by Fox Star Studios, went on to earn Rs 365 cr worldwide, with a record opening of Rs 39.32 crore.
