Police women above the age of 50, who have been deployed for security, return after worshipping at the Sabarimala temple.

A 30-year-old woman returned from the Pamba base camp and a 52-yr-old woman was injured as she tried to enter the Sabarimala temple in Kerala on Monday when it opened for five hours.

Monday evening saw massive protests amid heavy security deployed at the temple as it opened its doors between 5 pm and 10 pm.

The Indian Express reported that the Lalitha from Thrissur, the 52-year-old woman, was attacked and injured because protesters thought she was not over 50 years of age.

The report said that the woman's ID card was checked by the police, who then cleared her entry. She had to also be admitted to the Sannidhanam hospital.

Anju, the 30-year-old woman, returned from Pamba and NDTV reported that she has later told the police that she came on the insistence of her husband.

Reports also said that a cameraperson was injured during the protests.

The temple will open again Tuesday for the "Sree Chitira Atta Thirunal" puja to mark the birth anniversary of the last king of the princely state of Travancore Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma.

Thousands of pilgrims entered the temple as temple tantri (head priest) Kandararu Rajeevaru and melshanti (chief priest) Unnikrishnan Namboothiri jointly opened the portals of the sanctum sanctorum around 5 pm.

More than 2,300 police personnel were posted at the temple on Monday in anticipation of the protests. There were women police as well, but they were over the age of 50.

The protesters are agitating against a Supreme Court ruling that allowed the entry of women of all ages inside the temple.
