The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that court proceedings could be live streamed for cases that were of "constitutional importance".

The judgment was for a batch of petitions, one of which was filed by Swapnil Tripathi, and another by Senior Advocate Indira Jaising, according to Bar and Bench.

The report said that Jaising's petition had sought live streaming and webcast of cases of national and Constitutional importance.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud had reserved its verdict in the case on 24 August.

Justices Khanwilkar and Chandrachud had penned two separate opinions on the matter, with CJI Misra concurring with Khanwilkar's judgement.

"Sunlight is the best disinfectant," said Chandrachud in his opinion.

This has been a busy week for the Supreme court and CJI Misra, who is set to retire on 2 October. On Wednesday, the court also ruled that the controversial Aadhaar identity project was constitutional.
