Journalist Adrija Bose has won the best web feature award at the Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity 2017 for three HuffPost India stories published in 2017.
Bose, who is currently associate editor at CNN-News18, received the award from renowned journalist P. Sainath on Friday in New Delhi.
The three stories, which were reported from Rajasthan, Haryana and Kashmir, feature women who "fight their own battles", said a note from the event.
"Adrija's features focus on a wide range of issues from the women Muslim Qazis, to the mental anguish faced by Kashmiri women to the feel-good story on a girls' football team in Haryana. The features are well crafted, empathetic and drive home the point powerfully," added the note.
In India's Pioneering Women Qazis Ask Muslim Men: Have You Read The Quran?, published on 18 August 2017, Bose reported on women Islamic clerics, or Qazis, who have entered a domain that was exclusively male until recently. These clerics provide a much-needed support system to Muslim women who seek advice and adjudication, but also face a lot of opposition from orthodox voices.
For In This Haryana Village, There Is A Woman Footballer In Nearly Every Home, published on 21 August 2017, Bose visited Alakhpura, in Haryana's Bhiwani district, to find out how women in a village with an appalling sex ratio managed to script an incredible footballing success story. The story looked at not just the material transformation arising from sporting success but also how attitudes towards young women were changing due to this, and the state of women's football in the country.
There's A Secret Kashmiri Women Are Keeping From Their Families, published on 25 September 2017, highlighted the stress women living in the Kashmir Valley undergo and the challenges they face in accessing treatment and counselling. Bose spoke to both patients and doctors to report how living in a conflict zone could severely impact mental health, and how women are likely to be even more affected.
The Laadli Media awards were launched in 2007 to "honor, recognize and celebrate the efforts of those in media and advertising who highlight pressing gender concerns".
