The Bombay High Court has pulled up the Maharashtra police over a press conference they held after the arrest of activists from across India in connection with the violence at Bhima Koregaon.

ANI reported that this was while hearing a petition demanding a National Investigation Agency probe into the arrest of the activists who participated in the Elgaar Parishad in January. The court asked why the police was holding a press conference on a matter which was sub judice.

The court has adjourned the matter to 7 September.

The observation of the high court comes after activists Sudha Bharadwaj, Varavara Rao, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves and Gautam Navlakha were arrested last week. The Maharashtra police have claimed that they have been picked up for having connections with Maoists.

The arrests have been harshly criticised by many, who have described it as a crackdown against voices of dissent.

The Supreme Court, meanwhile, has put the activists under house arrest till 6 September.
