MK Stalin Elected President Of DMK

Update: MK Stalin, son of M Karunanidhi, has been elected president of the DMK on Tuesday during a meeting of the general council of the party.

After his election, Stalin also visited the memorial dedicated to Karunanidhi:

The 65-year-old had formally filed his nomination papers for the post on Sunday.

While Stalin's coronation is expected to be a smooth affair, with all 65 district secretaries of the DMK having proposed his name, his brother MK Alagiri, who was expelled from the party in 2014, has warned of "consequences" if he is not taken back into the party.

Alagiri is also planning to take out a march on 5 September.

Karunanidhi, five-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu, had died earlier this month at the age of 94.
