An army court of inquiry has ordered disciplinary action against Major Leetul Gogoi, finding him guilty in the Srinagar hotel case where he was found with a Kashmiri woman.

The Indian Express reported that the court found him guilty of "fraternising with locals in spite of instructions to the contrary and for being away from the place of duty while in operational area".

In May, Gogoi was detained by the police and handed over to the army along with a local woman and a man after a scuffle at a hotel in Srinagar, which is a counter-insurgency zone.

The Hindustan Times reported that the General Officer Commanding of Srinagar-based 15 Corps has approved the finding of the probe, which was conducted by a brigadier.

The Hindu reported that he is likely to be court marshalled.

Army chief Bipin Rawat had promised "strict action" if Gogoi was found guilty.

Rawat had told the media, "If anyone in the Indian Army, at any rank, does any wrong and it comes to our notice, then strictest action will be taken. If Major Gogoi has done something wrong then I can say that he will be given due punishment and the punishment will be such that it will set an example."

In 2017, Gogoi had made headlines for tying a man to the bonnet of his jeep as a human shield, allegedly to protect his convoy from stone pelters.
