In another horrific case of crime against a woman, a 24-year-old Delhi woman was shot by a man, reportedly her stalker, at her doorstep in Delhi's Ashok Vihar.
The accused, Harish Kumar, was arrested by the Delhi police on Sunday while the girl is recovering from serious injuries.
The Hindu reported that Kumar was angry that the girl, who works in Gurgaon in a multinational company, got engaged to someone else.
The accused and the victim reportedly knew each other since they used to live in the same locality in Delhi's Shahdara. While the victim's parents still live there, she had moved in with relatives in Ashok Nagar.
The victim's family has confirmed that she was being harassed by Kumar for a long time.
A senior police officer told The Indian Express, "The woman's family members informed police that Harish had been stalking and threatening her after her engagement. He also lives in Shahdara, and his parents were informed about his actions, following which both families sat together to discuss the issue. Harish's family promised that they would talk to him, but he did not stop stalking the woman."
Kumar's family is said to have disowned him.
While some reports claim that she had been in a relationship with him, The Indian Express reports that he had been stalking her for five years.
Kumar is said to have knocked on her door in Friday night and opened fire as soon as she opened the door and asked why he had come over.
The police have said they were able to catch him with the help of CCTV footage.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) Aslam Khan told The Hindu "Footage from CCTV cameras in the locality was checked. The accused was seen wearing an orange shirt... He was later traced and arrested on Sunday. The accused has been booked under Section 307 [attempt to murder] of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act. The weapon has been seized."
