In a horrific incident of trafficking, a man in Andhra Pradesh tried to allegedly sell off his daughter and wife to meet his debts.

NDTV reports that the 38-year-old man, who is an auto driver, is said to have tried to sell his 12-year-old daughter for Rs 1.5 lakhs once she attained puberty, and his wife for Rs 5 lakhs to his cousin.

The wife was allegedly unaware of his plans and fled to her parents' home in Nandyal in Kurnool district once she found out. That is where she is said to have registered a complaint.

The wife fears that he may have had plans to sell all his five children -- four daughters and a son.

A report in Deccan Chronicle says that it was the wife's parents who took the matter to the Nandyal Taluka police station.

The newspaper reported that the man in question was addicted to gambling and alcohol which made his debts run high. NDTV reported that he had debts amounting to Rs 15 lakhs.

NDTV also reported said that while child development services says they are going to register a complaint, the police are trying to get the couple to come to an understanding so that they don't have to register a case.

The Deccan Chronicle report said that the police said that though they have received a complaint, they refuted that it was to do with the man trying to sell his wife.
