13 Students Killed After Train Hits School Bus In Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar

The death toll could rise, say reports.

Thirteen school students were killed on Thursday morning as a bus they were traveling in collided with a train at an unmanned crossing in Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar.

While ANI had initially reported that 11 students had died, the latest reports say the death toll is at 13.

Reports suggest that seven students have been critically injured and the death toll could rise.

Reacting to the news, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the children who lost their lives in the accident. He also promised that the government will arrange for and take care of the expenses of those injured.

NDTV reported that the incident took place at 7 am on Thursday morning when the school bus carrying about 25 students was crossing the railway tracks and the train hit the bus.

The 11 children died on the spot.

Railway minister Piyush Goyal also announced an ex-gratia for the family of the deceased children.

He said on Twitter that the incident will be probed soon.

CM Adityanath also ordered an inquiry into the incident, saying those responsible will be nabbed.
