A 23-year-old woman allegedly staged a robbery at her own house to escape being married to a man chosen by her parents. The incident was reported in northeast Delhi's Seelampur area.

According to police, the accused in the case, Shabana, was to marry a man against her wishes on 26 November. Shabana had secretly married a 34-year-old man, Anish, two years ago, unknown to her parents.

In a bid to implicate her fiance, and escape the arranged marriage, Shabana allegedly staged a "robbery" in her home, claiming armed men fled with cash and jewellery for the wedding while she was at home. She told police that the unidentified men had their own keys to the closets in the house and tried to pin the blame on her fiance and his family. However, her inconsistent statements raised the police's suspicions, reported The Indian Express, and she was found to have been in constant contact with Anish at the time of the supposed robbery.

Cops have arrested both of them in the case.
