In what appears to be a horrific case of child abuse for year, a 12-year-old girl realised she had been repeatedly raped by her father for the past seven years after she was taught about good touch and bad touch in school.

The Hindustan Times reports that the rape survivor confided in her friend, who informed the principal of their school on Monday. A case under section 4 of the Pocso Act, 376 and 506 of the IPC has been registered against the accused, who hails from Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj, has been registered at Gurgaon's Bajghera police station.

This particular case is significant as research has shown most children are abused by people they know, and are often unaware of the abuse because of lack of sex education.

An NGO helped file the case against the girl's father. Pratibha Deepak Maheshwari who runs the NGO and is based out of Jaipur, had first taken the girl to Jaipur to protect the girl from her father.

She tells the newspaper that the survivor was raped whenever she was alone at home, and was beaten when she resisted. Her elder sister was also allegedly raped by the father. The mother of the two is said to be aware of the abuse, but allegedly chose to remain silent.

While this case points out how important sex education is, the BJP government has been wishy-washy in the past about the issue.

In 2014, then Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan had said that sex education should be banned in schools.

Later in 2016, the Centre had asked a panel that was making recommendations for a new education policy to remove the word "sex" and "sexual" from the final government document because it could "offend people."

As a result, India still does not have a government formulated sexual education for schools.
