A nightmarish video that's been doing the rounds on social media shows a helpless horse tied to poles, and a bunch of so-called human beings beating it with sticks, and pulling it from all directions. The video is reportedly from Haryana's Jind district.

The horse struggles for more than 10 minutes, and is eventually strangled to death.

On Tuesday, ten persons were booked for the beastly act.

What's even more heartbreaking is that the incident took place near the market on the busy Gohana road in Jind and even local police personnel were present at the spot, reports The Tribune, but not one person came to the poor animal's help.

According to reports, the local residents and the shopkeepers in the market had complained to the police about the stray horse attacking commuters and damaging property. However, the cops failed to inform any animal expert from the Animal Husbandry Department.

So, the locals decided to take matters in their own hands. With the help of the police, they strangled the horse.

"The police only helped in controlling the horse, as it was getting violent," inspector Dinesh Kumar, incharge of the Civil Lines police station told Hindustan Times.

When the HT reporter asked the inspector if there was no other way to control the horse, he had a sarcastic response: "Aap aa jate aur control kar lete..(you should have come and controlled it)."

The police personnel who were a part of the act have been transferred.

Deputy Commissioner Amit Khatri told The Tribune that the Jind SP had been asked to book all the attackers including the police personnel who saw the horse being killed.

"It is a shocking incident. We have accessed a video detailing the presence of police personnel and others seen killing the horse. We will identify the culprits and ensure legal action," he said.

The body of the horse has been sent for post-mortem and the autopsy report is yet to come.

A video of the horse being tortured was shared on YouTube.
