A 20-year-old girl tweeted to Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday, alleging that she has been stalked and harassed by a man relentlessly for four years and she was ready to kill herself if the man was not punished and made to leave her alone.
She added that she had filed a complaint at the Jarcha police station in Uttar Pradesh on 10 July, but nothing came out of it. Meanwhile, she alleged, the harassment went on.
According to Times of India, the woman -- a Dalit who lives in Chouna village in UP -- has also been pressurised by the alleged stalker to withdraw the complaint or else face 'dire consequences'.
"@Uppolice plz sir save me help me otherwise I got suicide it is last option for me mujpe preser bana re h FIR wapis lu. Mar dalega muje sav," she tweeted.
The woman told the police that the 42-year-old accused lived in the compound of the school she studied in. His wife, she said, is a senior HR official at Kendriya Vidyalaya, NTPC Dadri.
The complainant said that her ordeal began when she was a student at the Dadri school. Though her tweet doesn't reveal details of her ordeal, she had said in her complaint that the man started harassing her when she was a tenth standard student in the school. This continued till the first few months of 2015, after which she moved to Aligarh to study Ayurvedic medicine in a medical college there. She told Times of India that she took moved to another city to avoid the alleged stalker.
However, her nightmare didn't end there. To her horror, the man followed her to Aligarh. The girl suspects that the stalker acquired her personal information from her college and started following her around in Aligarh as well.
"Somehow he managed to get details about me from the college office. He started following me around and once again attempted to sexually harass me," she maintained in her complaint.
She added that the accused had even made her number public and she often used to get threatening and obscene phone calls from unknown people.
Dadri Circle Officer Piyush Kumar Singh told TOI, "The SHO investigated the matter at his level and also interrogated the accused. We have added sections of SC/ST Act in the FIR. Now I am personally investigating the matter and examining the evidence. I have called the student to share some more information. We will take action against the accused on the basis of merit."
Stalking and harassment has been been a persistent problem for women in India for years now. On Saturday, a Chandigarh woman was allegedly harassed and stalked by a BJP leader's son while she was driving back home at night. The accused was arrested and promptly released on bail.
