A day after Air India's "conscious move" to stop serving non-vegetarian food in the economy class on domestic routes attracted criticism on social media, its competitors have already begun wooing potential passengers.

Right on cue, air carrier Vistara, a joint venture between Tatas and Singapore Airlines, posted an ad on its social media platforms that read:

Chicken or Vegetarian? We leave the choice to you!

The ad has been retweeted at least 350 times since it was posted, setting Twitter abuzz.

While many were busy making memes and jokes about Vistara's dig at Air India, Vistara's Chief Strategy and Commercial Officer Sanjiv Kapoor had this to say about the ad:

Here is how Twitter has been reacting:

On Monday, Air India Chairman and Managing Director Ashwani Lohani told the Hindu, that the decision had been taken with a view to avoid food wastage.

"Since in economy class food preferences are not given, a lot of wastage takes place," Lohani had explained. "Nowadays, a lot of people ask for vegetarian food because they are health conscious. There was a lot of non-vegetarian food being wasted. So the management thought that it would be the best to serve only vegetarian food."
