This is turning out to be a good year for the IITs. First IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay were ranked among world's top 200 universities and about time.

And now, 206 girls from IIT-Madras have found job placements, almost double as many as last year, the Times of India has reported.

In 2016, only 109 girls were recruited by companies who visit the IIT-Madras campus during placement season.

The first phase of placement took place in December while the second phase began in January, ending in the placement of 769 students in all. The overall placement figure has improved too but only marginally, compared to the 725 students hired in 2016.

A major reason behind the improvement in placement was an increase in the number of companies that visited IIT-Madras this time to look for job aspirants. This year, some 226 companies participated in the placement process and offered 935 jobs, as compared to 2016, when 213 firms made 872 job offers.

Apparently, there has been a drop in the number of companies from financial, consulting and analytics sectors but the deficit has been made up by the growing participation of IT companies, IIT-Madras' training and placement advisor, Prof Manu Santhanam told the New Indian Express.

The multinational technology corporation Intel hired 29 students, becoming the biggest recruiter this season, followed by Citicorp Service, Samsung R&D and Cognizant.

While most students find jobs through the university's placement cell, some also get offered positions through department faculties and out-of-placement offers. Some students also choose to defer applying for jobs by a year to apply for further studies or execute their own entrepreneurial ideas.
