A group of women employees of a pub in Gurgaon, Haryana, taught a lesson to a man, who allegedly tried molesting one of them on Saturday night, by beating him up with slippers.
In a video released by ANI, a group of 4-5 women are seen slapping and beating the accused with shoes on Gurgaon's MG Road, with several onlookers gathered around. PTI reported that the man was inebriated and had tried to molest one of the pub's women employees by grabbing her from behind. Eyewitnesses also said that were no cops around at the time of the incident.
Gurgaon has one of the highest incidence of criminal activities among Indian cities, especially against women. In response to the incident, ACP Manish Sehgal told ANI that the police were deploying women constables at several locations there to ensure women's safety.
The video, which went viral on social media, comes days after a horrific incident in which a woman was gang-raped in Gurgaon by three men, one of whom also smashed her baby to death.
Together, the two incidents highlight the challenges of negotiating acutely unsafe roads for Indian women. More often than not, women are left to fend for themselves due to lack of strict law and order measures.
Yesterday's incident is one of many of women being forced to retaliate and "teach" their harasser a lesson in the absence of adequate policing. Last September, another video from Uttar Pradesh showed a 17-year-old woman from Bareilly beating up a man with her slipper after he followed her to her college and passed lewd comments at her.
In the beginning of this year, amidst reports of masses of women being molested on New Year's Eve in Bengaluru, a woman from the city described how she fought off a man a who tried to grope her around 1.30 am.
In a Facebook post that went viral, the 24-year-old photographer described how she fought off the culprit, who groped her, by punching and kicking back at him. She also mentioned that though there were 10 or 15 witnesses to the incident, no one said anything to the man. Rather they tried to stop her from beating him up instead. The cops present on the scene did not intervene either, and the accused eventually escaped.
