CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury was roughed up by a young man at a press conference in New Delhi.

Enraged members of the Communist Party of India-Marxist pounced on him and an accomplice and thrashed them before handing over the pair to police. Both were said to be from the Hindu Sena.

Their identity has not been ascertained yet. But they shouted slogans of 'Hindu Sena zindabad' and 'CPI(M) murdabad'.

The two persons allegedly barged into the CPI(M) head office today and shouted slogans against the Left ahead of a press conference where Yechur y was to brief the press on the conclusion of the CPI(M) politburo's two-day meeting here.

Yechury described the attack as an attempt by the RSS "to silence the voices of dissent".

"We will not be cowed down by Sangh goondagardi to silence us. This is a battle for the soul of India, which we will win," he tweeted.

The Delhi Police had also deployed heavy security in view of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's presence at the meeting.

Vijayan has been facing flak from some right-wing organisations over his criticism of the Centre's recent notification relating to cattle slaughter.
