A 50-year-old self-proclaimed godman has been booked by Thane police on charges of raping and threatening a woman on the pretext of curing her father of cancer.

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the victim first ran into the accused, Sailal Hiralal Jedia, on Facebook two years ago. He went on to assure her that he would cure her father of cancer.

"Convinced, the woman decided to meet him in Thane," the investigating officer told HT. "He demanded money to treat her father. Over a period of two years, he raped her and threatened to circulate her videos on social media if she raised an alarm."

According to the victim, the godman cheated her of ₹3.10 lakh.

Jedia has reportedly been booked under Sections 376, 506 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and under the Black Magic Act.

The police officer also said that Jedia's location has been traced and a team of officers dispatched to arrest him.
