A case was lodged against a shop owner in the City Mall in Kota for selling shoes in a box with the Indian Tricolour printed on it.

An FIR was registered on Monday after the complainant Kranti Tiwari approached the police on Sunday evening, stating that when he visited the mall, he saw shoes being sold at a shop in a tri-coloured box.

According to a report in the Times Of India, a police team then visited the spot and seized the shoe boxes with the tricolour printed on them. The shop owner has been charged under sections of Prevention of Insults to National Tricolour Act, 1971.

"It was found that the shopkeeper, identified as Mahesh, had purchased the lot of shoes from Delhi and he said that these were 'China made' shoes," a police officer told the Times Of India. "We have also sought the phone numbers and contact number of the wholesaler from whom he procured the goods."

The complainant Kranti Tiwari is the president of the Congress party's social justice and empowerment cell in Rajasthan. He posted photographs of the shoe boxes in the shop on his Facebook account.

In January, there was much outrage after it was discovered that Amazon Canada was selling doormats with the Indian national flag printed on them. The External Affairs Minister had called the sale of the doormats unacceptable. She asked the Indian High Commission in Canada to take the matter up with Amazon "at the highest level."
