IIT Madras Student Allegedly Attacked For Participating In 'Beef Fest'

According to an eyewitness, a group of students surrounded R Sooraj and attacked him, seriously injuring his right eye.

CHENNAI -- A PhD scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), on Tuesday suffered serious eye injury when he was attacked by a group of students for participating in a 'beef fest' held in the campus.

The beef festival was held on Sunday in protest against the central government's order banning sale of bovines for slaughter.

According to an IIT-M student, a group of students surrounded R Sooraj and attacked him, damaging his right eye during lunch time at the mess.

Sooraj was taken to an eye hospital.

Sooraj is doing his PhD in aerospace at the premier institute.

On Sunday a large group of students held a 'beef festival' in IIT-M in protest against the central government's order banning sale of bovines for slaughter.
