A day after a toddler was found clinging to his dead mother's body alongside railway tracks in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh district and trying to breastfeed, the police have reportedly identified the dead woman.

According to a Hindustan Times report, a man by the name of Ganesh Ahirwar identified the deceased as his wife Phullo, a resident of neighbouring Sagar district.

Ahirwar said that Phullo had left for Garhakota town for treatment of epileptic fits on Tuesday, but had no clue on how she reached Damoh or why she had boarded a train.

The baby, named Devi Singh, was being kept in the Damoh district hospital mortuary since yesterday, and was handed over to his father on Thursday evening. The family also was given ₹11,000 by the state finance minister, Jayant Malaiya.

The deceased was found by passersby lying on the railway tracks early on Wednesday morning, with the toddler trying to wake up his dead mother.

It is being assumed that the woman fell from the train and excessive bleeding from her head was the cause of death.

The police have recorded the family's statement and are now waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain the cause of death.
