AAP Govt Waives Off Electricity Bill Arrears Of Families Affected By 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots

The AAP government in New Delhi announced on Thursday that it would waive off electricity bill arrears of families who were victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the city.

The Times of India reported that while the decision will benefit 2,274 families living in various resettlement colonies, it will also cost a whopping ₹13-14 crore to the exchequer.

The decision was approved by the Delhi cabinet on Wednesday and the announcement was made by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia.

The Hindustan Times reported Sisodia as saying that the rebate for households consuming up to 400 units per month will also be given to these families.

"This is a one-time settlement in which all their pending electricity bills, including late payment, surcharge and penalty, have been waived. The decision was taken because most of the survivors are widows and elderly people with meagre financial resources," Sisodia was quoted by The Times of India as saying.

Reports said that people who need to avail the benefits need to be the original allottee of flats given to victims of the riot, and they should the a resident of Delhi.
