A 7-year-old mentally-challenged boy in Odisha's Dhenkanal district was allegedly kept tied with ropes by his maternal grandmother for the last seven months, before being rescued by officials on Tuesday, the Indian Express reported.
Apparently, the 70-year-old lady tied her grandson with ropes to prevent him from escaping.
The victim's mother died soon after giving birth to him and his father re-married, leaving the child with his grandmother.
"Since she is now 70 years old and unable to take care of the boy, she ties his leg with a rope," Child Protection Officer Anuresha Goswami said.
"We have done a medical check-up of the boy," Goswami also said. "We have now kept him at the open shelter in Maharshi Dayanand Centre. The Child Welfare Committee will take a decision whether he will be shifted to an institution for mentally-challenged or will undergo treatment."
Earlier this month, a 15-year old girl was rescued after allegedly being held captive inside her house in Delhi for almost two years by her mother.
