Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has directed the government officials to distribute school bags to children. But the first thing that strikes you when you are offered a bag is-- it has Akhilesh Yadav's face on it. It also has the slogan of the Samajwadi Party.

So why this strange decision?

According to the officials, Yogi Adityanath decided on this because he wanted to save money. Officials also told NDTV that the chief minister wanted the bags to reach students in time for the new session.

An earlier Times Of India report noted how lakhs of school bags with pictures of the former CM were lying around in storerooms. No one knew what to do with them after the change in regime.

The deputy director education (primary), Abdul Mubin, then wrote to basic shiksha adhikaris (BSAs) of 23 districts to "follow the previous orders and take necessary action" regarding the free school bags, reported ToI.

The NDTV report notes that once this batch of bags are exhausted, the chief minister will print news bags with "Mukhya Mantri Yojana" or "Uttar Pradesh Yojana" written on them.
