Hours after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday, unidentified people shot at Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Gani Dar killing him, even as the valley remained tense..
Reports suggest he was shot in south Kashmir's Pinglan area in Pulwama district while he was travelling in his car.
The Hindustan Times quoted a doctor of the Srinagar hospital as saying, "The person was brought dead. He is no more."
The newspaper reported that he had been shot in his chest.
The Times of India quoted a senior police official earlier as saying, "He was shifted to a SMHS hospital in Srinagar where his condition is stated to be critical."
Schools and colleges have been shut in the region because of clashes between protesters and security forces.

Earlier in the day, Mehbooba told the media that she had discussed the security situation in Kashmir. She had said that it was important to hold talks at the earliest and restore a peaceful atmosphere.
The ANI had quoted her as saying:
Modi ji has repeatedly said that he would follow Vajpayee ji's footsteps, whose policy is of reconciliation not confrontation:Mehbooba Mufti pic.twitter.com/qhD4bicg7q— ANI (@ANI_news) April 24, 2017
Mehbooba also said that a conducive atmosphere was required for talks, adding that disillusioned and angry youth indulge in Kashmir indulge in stone pelting.
"We must start from where Vajpayee ji left... Modi ji has repeatedly said that he would follow the footsteps of Vajpayee ji, whose policy was of reconciliation, not confrontation. There is no option but to talk," she said.
