In a first, the BJP will hold a grand meeting with its allies from different states across the country in New Delhi on Monday. In what is being touted as a show of its wide reach and clout, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also host a dinner for the leaders attending this meet.
A BJP functionary told The Hindustan Times, "This event will showcase NDA's expanse and its increasing clout in Indian politics... we have seen geographical, political and ideological expansion in last three years."
Since the National Democratic Alliance has come to power at the Centre, the BJP has seen victories in state elections as well, and especially in places like Assam where it did not previously have a stronghold. It has formed state governments in the key states of Manipur, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and Goa. The icing on the cake has been the most sought after state, in terms of politics, Uttar Pradesh.
With the latest victories in the Assembly elections held earlier this year, it is perhaps, the perfect time for the BJP to exhibit its strength and unity.
The Indian Express reports that the meeting to be held at the Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra, Chanakyapuri will see more than 50 leaders from 31 different regional parties in attendance. Modi and party chief Amit Shah will also be present at this event.
And not just a show of unity, this is also laying ground for future prospects of the BJP.
A party leader tells The Indian Express, "Apart from boosting coordination between the NDA allies, this meeting will bolster the BJP's attempts to win more seats in 2019 (Lok Sabha polls)."
Reports suggest that the meeting is also significant because of the preparations the upcoming presidential elections.
A senior NDA leader was quoted by LiveMint as saying, "We believe that this is the first step to discuss President and vice-president elections. So far, there has been no discussion on the issue because the budget session was going on. Since the budget session will end in a few days, the government it seems is starting consultations for President and vice-president candidates."
Allies like the Shiv Sena, LJP, RLSP, Apna Dal, TDP, Naga People's Front and Sikkim Democratic Front are expected to participate.
