In a horrific instance of cruelty inflicted upon a child, an eight-year-old boy tortured with cigarette burns all over his body succumbed to his injuries on Monday night.

On 31 March, Mettala Venkata Rao of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh was sent by his 19-year-old neighbour to buy cigarettes from a nearby shop. However, the child used the ₹10 given to him to buy toffees for himself instead.

The livid neighbour, identified as Vadala Narendra, then dragged Rao back to his house and tortured him with cigarette burns all night.

The next day, Narendra left Rao at some distance from their village. A woman who saw the boy asked him about the injuries and alerted the villagers.

Rao, who had burn marks even on his face and near the eyes, was admitted to a hospital.

After four days of suffering, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday night. According to the Times of India, the infection caused by the burns had spread throughout Rao's body, making his recovery impossible.

Narendra has been arrested by the police and charged with murder.
