Geetha Johri, Gujarat's first female IPS officer has now become the state's first female DGP after the outgoing DGP-in-charge PP Pandey, an accused in the Ishrat Jahan case, decided to step down.

Johri is presently posted as managing director, Gujarat Police Housing Corporation in Gandhinagar.

The announcement was made by the minister of state for home Pradeepsinh Jadeja who said that Johri has been given the additional charge as she is the senior-most IPS officer in the state.

However, Johri has had her own set of controversies.

The 1982-batch IPS officer first shot to limelight when she raided the premises of Gujarat underworld don Abdul Latif and arrested his key aide Sharif Khan. She reportedly defied her superiors in doing this.

A Times of India article notes how Johri's career graph has been a "turbulent wave". She reportedly also made a breakthrough in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter investigation.

She was reportedly demoted from a senior post and shunted into heading the police training academy in Vadodara following the several clashes with her seniors and prominent politicians.

In 2006, Johri headed the investigations into the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case and disappearance of his wife Kausarbi.

Later on, after the case was transferred to CBI following court order, the central probe agency chargesheeted her allegedly for botching up the investigation, reports Indian Express.

In 2010, Johri alleged that the CBI was "pressuring her to falsely implicate the former Gujarat Minister, Amit Shah," as reported in The Hinduat the time.

On Monday, the Supreme Court had directed the state government to accept Pandey's resignation.

Pandey was heading the state crime branch when Ishrat, a 19-year-old girl based in Mumbra near Mumbai, Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjadali Akbarali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were killed in an encounter with police on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004.
