A senior bureaucrat in the Union Home Ministry has been removed and an inquiry into allegations of corruption against him has been instituted. The bureaucrat is a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Service officer (IAS). Repeated attempts to reach the officer failed.

A top source in the ministry told Huffington Post India that Prime Minister Narender Modi had summoned the bureaucrat and then questioned him on allegations of corruption against him.

The officer was involved in work related to police modernisation, postings of the Indian Police Service officers, administration of Union Territories. The Union Home Ministry spends a substantial amount of money for modernising the state police organisations.

The exact nature of the allegations against him is not clear. Senior ministry officials refused to comment.

The government's order said the officer will no longer be in charge and is being sent on leave for two months. It also asked the officer to join the inquiry.

Allegations of corruption and wrong doing by senior officers have repeatedly embarrassed the Home Ministry.

Earlier, another senior IAS officer posted in the crucial Foreigners Wing – that looks at foreign funding received by Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) -- was suspended from the ministry.
