Arrested for assaulting a senior resident doctor at the Goverment Medical College (GMC), Pradip Sadashiv Vetale, hanged himself on Tuesday.

The Indian Express quoted Dhule SP Chaitanya S as saying, "The CID has been handed over the investigation and it has collected CCTV footage of the lock-up where the accused was lodged. The post-mortem report is expected Wednesday, which will ascertain the cause of death."

Vetale was arrested along with eight others of a mob that beat up Dr Rohan Mhamunkar so bad the he suffered several injuries, including permanent damage on one eye.

DNA had reported on Tuesday that Mhamunkar was beaten up by a mob of relatives of a patient because he had asked them to take the patient to another centre as the neurosurgeon was not present at the GMC.

A video of the CCTV footage shows several people beating up the doctor, punching and kicking him to the ground. They had even vandalised the operation theatre.

Chaitanya S had tweeted about the action taken against the accused on Monday:

The photos of the injuries doing the rounds of Twitter go to show how brutal this assault was.

The police, according to The Indian Express, said that Vetale went to the toilet on Tuesday afternoon and hanged himself from the toilet ceiling.
