In a move that seems to be biased against women who are married, a notification by the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society has said that they cannot study in the social welfare residential women's degree colleges in the state.

This decision was made apparently because in residential colleges husbands may want to come visit their wives and that may distract the other women studying there.

The Times of India quoted content manager B Venkat Raju as saying, "The intention to ensure that other girls in the residential degree colleges do not get distracted because there is every possibility of husbands visiting their wives weekly once or in a fortnight. We do not want any kind of distraction among students."

The move comes at a time when across India, child marriages are still rampant. Many women are also married just when they become adults.

The government which is supposed to promote education for girls and even women has taken a few step backwards which is also a clear indication of their biases.

The report suggests that activists in the state also questioned the decision siting that child marriages were still rampant in the state.

The notification, according to The Hindu said:

Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS) has invited applications from women (unmarried) candidates for admission into B.A/B.Com/B.Sc first year degree courses for the academic year 2017-18
