Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani recently announced that from 31 March, customers of Reliance Jio LTE mobile services will have to pay for data. After inaugurating Jio for the public domain on 5 September last year, the company provided free data, voice, SMS and premium content for almost six months under its Welcome and Happy New Year offers.

Now, to enjoy benefits that are similar to the Happy New Year scheme, consumers will have to enroll for the Jio Prime Membership before 31 March. Here are the plan's details —

What is Jio Prime Membership?

It is a plan with a one-time opt-in fee of ₹99 that will unlock premium plans for customers.

How can one enroll for Jio Prime Membership?

A customer can visit this link on Jio's website to enter their mobile phone number and pay a membership fee. Alternatively, the opt-in can be achieved through JioMoney or MyJio app. Customers can also visit a Reliance Digital store and enroll as members.

What are the benefits and plans?

There are two Prime plans in both pre-paid and post-paid options. These plans are priced at ₹303 and ₹499 with a validity of 28 days. The first plan is identical to the Happy New Year plan with free voice calls, 1 GB free data usage limit per day and premium services on offer. The second plan provides 2 GB data per day. For other plans too, Jio provides added benefit to prime members.

What if one doesn't want to enroll in the Jio Prime Plan?

Jio offers many other plans, ranging from ₹19 to ₹9,999. The big-value plans offer data from 60 GB to 200 GB.

What will happen if one doesn't enroll in any plan by 31 March?

Users will still be able to receive free incoming calls and messages for another 90 days. Their phone numbers might be disconnected subsequently.

Jio's competitors are also gearing up for battle by offering attractive new plans. Bharti Airtel recently announced competitive schemes for its users.
