Family, friends, neighbours, even strangers poured into Srinivas Kuchibhotla's family home in Hyderabad to pay their last respects to the Indian techie, who was tragically shot dead in a bar in Kansas, US, last week.

Reports mentioned Kuchibhotla's family breaking down at the sight of his body, flown in from the US by a special cargo aircraft. His widow, Sunayana Dumala, brother and another relative came back to India by a different flight. His body, which was kept at his residence for people to bid him goodbye, was cremated this afternoon.

The 32-year-old's inconsolable mother said she would like her younger son, Sai Kiran, to come back to India from the US. Earlier Dumala, too, had demanded of the US government an answer about what it was doing to address the rising incidence of hate crimes across the country.

Kuchibhotla and his friend Alok Madasani were shot at by Adam Purinton, a former US Navy employee, after he asked them to get out of his country. A third person, 24-year-old Ian Grillot, a white American man, was injured in the tussle to prevent Purinton causing any further harm to anyone in the bar.

Mourners at Kuchibhotla's residence were mostly numb with shock, remembering him as a lively, helpful and kind young man. The techie, who went to the US in 2005 to study there, was going to turn 33 in a few days. He and his wife were also planning to start a family soon, one of Kuchibhotla's uncles informed the press.

So far, the US government has not made any clear statement condemning the attacker and the incident, except to say such cases are always tragic. His family, however, maintains there's a link between Trump coming to power and his unfortunate death.
