Hours after trolling a 20-year-old student of Delhi University for promoting peace between India and Pakistan, Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda has released a statement claiming he was just laughing at a witty joke.

"Don't hang me over a laugh!" wrote the 40-year-old actor in his Facebook page on Monday night. "I'm being held responsible for instigating hate threats against a young girl, shockingly by the girl herself. That's absolutely untrue."

Hooda claimed that he had only laughed at cricketer Virender Sehwag's joke on Twitter, and that he or Sehwag could not be held responsible for encouraging others who were harassing the student, Gurmehar Kaur, online. Kaur on Monday had submitted a complaint to the Delhi Commission for Women alleging she was receiving rape threats.

Condemning violence, especially if directed against women, Hooda claimed that he and Sehwag were only exercising their freedom of expression, and had not bullied or trolled Kaur. Hooda referred to Kaur's "young, impressionable shoulders" in a similarly patronising manner as earlier when he called her a "political pawn".

"She is in no way representing all the martyrs and their children," wrote Hooda. "It's her personal opinion and should be taken as such."
